E-Verify+ Trial Service Announced by DHS

E-Verify+ Trial Service in effect

The federal government’s online employment eligibility verification tool, E-Verify, recently introduced significant changes. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) introduced a new pilot program for E-Verify+.

This system is an updated verification system with massive updates for E-Verify. For example, it encourages employees to participate more in the process. Traditionally, individuals completed the employment eligibility verification (Form I-9) and E-Verify processes separately. However, the new E-Verify+ program would merge the two processes into one. This update changes how employers handle I-9 and E-Verify.

For example, employees may directly input their Form I-9 information and documentation into the federal system. Once the employees finish this step, the employer’s Human Resources (HR) can review and approve the data. In the past, employers’ HR personnel had to do it.

The employer and employee must electronically sign and submit the information to begin the E-Verify+ process. Once submitted, the system will automatically complete a Form I-9. After this step, the form will become available for the employee and potential employers to download and store.

The E-Verify+ system will manage cases in the same location as the regular system. One change between E-Verify and E-Verify+ concerns who the system contacts due to non-confirmations. E-Verify will contact the employer and require them to address the problem. In this case, the employer must contact the employee to address the errors. However, E-Verify+ contacts the employee to resolve the issue directly instead. This change significantly reduces processing delays.

The DHS announced the availability for the program’s trial stage on May 20, 2204. During this period, employers can choose whether to use E-Verify+ or continue using the standard E-Verify system. According to the announcement, this trial will allow E-Verify users to assess the user experience of the new E-Verify+ system.

It remains unknown whether the DHS will release a full E-Verify+ experience. The original E-Verify system remained in the pilot stage for roughly a decade before the DHS fully released it to the public. As such, many suspect it will take significant time to release the fully operational platform.

Until E-Verify+ has a set release date, employers can simplify the employment eligibility verification process with an I-9 management system. This system helps ensure compliance with the ever-changing federal regulations and offers an optional E-Verify integration. It also includes guidance throughout the process, digital storage, and notifications of when to take further action.
